As soon as the public had a chance to observe the 2017 Audi Q7 of the new generation in details, presented at the International Detroit Motor Show, the automobile manufacturer from Germany have arrived at the Geneva Auto Show.
The premiere of an unusual modification of the car, equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, has taken place. It should be noted that the Audi Q7 e-tron is considered to be kind of a branch, rather than a particular version of the Q7 model.
The Q7 e-tron Exterior
The front of the car is distinguished by a modified bumper, massive air intakes, as well as the large hexagonal-shaped radiator grille with chrome inlays. The “narrowed” optics with LED lights, the fog lights, as well as the dual protection of flooring – all these elements have been inherited from the initial model.
The sides of the body have been maintained in its standard design. The Q7 e-tron also features extraordinary rear-view mirrors, a little rounded wheel arches, stylish wheel disks, which have been developed specifically for the hybrid model version. The rear bumper has received a small update. The rear optics attracts the maximum of attention. Sufficiently large tailgate provides a comfortable luggage loading and unloading.
Some critics characterize this SUV to be a large wagon. The only thing could be specifically said, that the novelty has become more exquisite, and even some “good-natured” comparing to the previous version. Because of this fact, the exterior appeal is not lost, but on the contrary, the number of the Audi Q7 fans has increased several times.
The SUV Dimensions
Changes in the exterior did not affect the overall dimensions, remaining the same as of the standard Q7 version:
- The width of the model is equal to 1968 mm;
- The length of the car reaches 5052 mm;
- The height of the novelty doesn’t exceed 1740 mm;
- The clearance on the model with spring suspension is 190 mm;
- The air suspension lowers the car clearance to 145-235 mm;
- The wheelbase corresponds to 2990 mm.
The Interior Design
Some dramatic changes in the interior of the Q7 e-tron should not be expected, as long as the car has been recently presented to the public for the first time. It took very little time since the debut of a standard SUV till the hybrid version’s launch. And indeed, is it necessary to adjust the already excellent interior?
The Audi Q7 interior allows the driver to use the multifunctional steering wheel, along with a digital dashboard with multi-function on-board computer. Since this is a “hybrid” model, the instrument panel has been slightly updated.
The center console looks rather nonstandard, as there is an obvious lack of the multimedia system screen. It has housed the buttons for the air conditioning as well as some other systems control. But nevertheless, the touch screen is installed, appearing from the front panel, after pressing of the appropriate button.
The SUV Price
Unfortunately, the manufacturer has not yet announced the price of the car. The thing is that the leadership is in no hurry with the start of sales. The first buyer can purchase the Q7 hybrid model in spring of the current year. Consequently, it is still early to pronounce the price.
It should be recalled, that the initial version of this car powered by the conventional engine will cost 61 000 EUR for the European customers. It’s hard to imagine what the price in Russia would be. But this will not prevent Audi from showing excellent sales on any market where the German manufacturer plans to send the model.
The New German “Hybrid” Specifications
Now let’s talk about what distinguishes the Q7 e-tron specifically from the standard Q7 second generation. First of all, it should be noted that the vehicle combines the work of the diesel power unit with an electric motor, and it is an extremely rare feature.
The function of the classical internal combustion engine in the hybrid system is performed by the three-liter turbo diesel engine, producing a peak power of 258 hp and a maximum torque of almost 600 Nm. It is coupled with an electric motor, giving 95 kW and 350 Nm of torque.
This powerplant generates an impressive total of 373 hp /700 Nm.
The plug-in hybrid engine is paired with an automatic eight-speed gearbox. The acceleration from standstill to one hundred, with such equipment, is achieved in 6 seconds. It reaches the top speed of 225 km/h, being apparently limited by electronics.
The battery provides 17.3 kW of energy for the electric motor. Engineers have invented a very interesting system. When the battery is extremely hot, the heat of it goes for the interior heating, if necessary.
Using of the electric mode exclusively enables the car driving for a distance of 56 km.
The manufacturer claims that the hybrid version of the vehicle is incredibly economical. According to the automotive company data, the engine is able to consume only 1.7 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers in the combined cycle.
