Crossovers have become famous among modern motorists, so the popularity of the BMW X3 grows rapidly. In 2010, 46,000 models of the second generation were produced before the BMW X3’s debut, then during the following three years the production had been three times increased, and in 2013 there were already 157,300 released cars.
Apparently, that’s why, without waiting for the next update of the second generation SUV, which should happen in 2016, the German manufacturer has already begun to tease the many fans with the information about the third generation 2017 BMW X3.
According to the one authoritative German publication, the new generation of this model will be unveiled in 2017 under the codename G01. Today, this model is already extensively tested in Northern Europe.
The Exterior Design
Despite the very tight camouflage, some elements of the updated car can still be observed. The model rendering makes it clear what expectations as for the design of the 2017 BMW X3 are. The novelty will follow the directions of the exterior design, set in the BMW X6 F16 as well as in the BMW X5 F15. The main features are:
- Massive body sides;
- A smooth transition of the front grille to the headlights;
- A sharper angle of attack, with a grill under it;
- The tail lights equipped with LEDs and distinguished by the L-shape;
- The improved shape of the luggage compartment door.
The Interior Features and the New Functions
There is information that the third generation will receive major changes in its interior. The updating will concern interior materials and other options for the driver as well. It is likely that the new X3 will offer the adaptive headlights, as well as special semi-autonomous features such as a traffic jam assistant.
The new generation will get a feature of tailgate opening and closing control, enhanced with the new gesture technology, installable rear seats to fit for tilt and height, as well as a panoramic roof. Due to the modular system the vehicle interior will be more comfortable and spacious. According to some unofficial sources, the weight of the car will be minimized in 100 kg, comparing with the current model.
The Technical Specs of the Novelty
The car is based on the latest modular CLAR platform. The weight of the car has been significantly reduced thanks to the cluster architecture; and the dimensions of the car have been expanded.
The four-cylinder and the six-cylinder versions of engines will be installed in the new car lineup, which will carry out its work on diesel as well as gasoline fuel. The “three cylinders” are not provided for the crossover. In general it can be said that, comparing with engines of the second generation of the model the maximum capacity will grow for at least 15 horsepower.
In addition, the implementation of a two-liter plug-in hybrid petrol version of the engine, producing 245 horsepower, and an electric motor with a capacity of 95 horsepower is planned. The total capacity of this unit will be equal to 300 hp and 700 Nm of torque. The battery reserve enables driving, in the electric mode exclusively, for a distance of 50 km.
You can charge the battery from the mains or with the modern wireless charger, which will soon be developed by the Mercedes for its S-Class sedan. Presumably the average fuel consumption of the BMW X3 third generations, accounting the established “hybrid”, will be about 3.8 liters for a distance of 100 kilometers.
There is also a rumor that the new BMW X3 will acquire a highly efficient powertrain line. The “top” versions of the crossover will be equipped with a powerful engine, the maximum production of the BMW X3 M 40 will be 360 horsepower and the BMW X3 M will be supplied with bi-turbo power unit with a maximum capacity of 422 horsepower.
The BMW X3 M will apparently be revealed a year after the standard version of the third generation debut, that is, in 2018. It should also be informed, that in the same year, the new generation of the X4 model will have its public premiere. The codename “G02” will be used for the X4, designed on the same modular platform, the SUV will get a similar “stuffing” as in the BMW X3.
