At the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the South Korean KIA manufacturer introduced the fourth generation of the famous Sportage crossover, developed on the same platform as the Hyundai Tucson SUV 3, replacing the ix35 model.
The Car Exterior Design
The side profile of the 2017 KIA Sportage appears to be the same as of the previous version, with a sufficiently large rear rack, but the rear and the front parts have been fully modified.
The car has been decorated with the relief-shaped hood, the branded grille, the large fog lamps housing, as well as a very high position of the headlamps.
The rear of the car can boast of the original narrowed lights with a chrome trim piece between them, a new tailgate with a rather massive spoiler and an upgraded bumper. The luggage compartment door looks much more modern as compared to the one on the previous model, due to the slight reduction of the occupied area.
It should be noted, that the GT Line version of this car has been proposed, which is distinguished by the stylish 19-inch wheels disks, a diffuser, the LED fog lights, an improved suspension and the dual exhaust tailpipes. Summing up the review of the exterior, it can be said that the crossover has been significantly changed, becoming more dynamic, attractive and modern.
The Novelty Interior
The KIA Sportage of the fourth generation has been significantly improved in its interior. The Multimedia System, enclosed by the air ducts on both sides, is reminiscent of a similar solution used in the previous model, as well as a larger Sorento Prime SUV.
The interior will be equipped with a multifunctional steering wheel; the dashboard design will be changed, featuring the 4.2 inch multi-color display. The central tunnel will get the button for the manual electric brake. The car is provided with six airbags, EBD, ABS, TPMS, ESC, as well as the Hill Start Assist System.
In addition, customers will appreciate the heated steering wheel and rear seats, the optional perpendicular and parallel parking assistant, the system keeping the vehicle in its lane, the Rear Cross Traffic Alert warning about other vehicles crossing behind in the process of reversing, the engine start button, the keyless access to the car, the adaptive cruise control, a quality leather trim of the interior, panoramic glass roof, as well as the electric drive for the luggage compartment door.
The 2017 Sportage Dimensions
Similarly to the car based on the same platform, the new Sportage appeared to be a bit larger in its overall dimensions than the predecessor:
- The length of the model has increased by 40 mm to 4480 mm;
- The wheel base – by 30 mm to 2670 mm;
- The width remained unchanged, being 1655 mm;
- The height is equal to 1855 mm.
The capacity of the new Sportage luggage compartment has increased from 466 to 503 liters. The front overhang has increased by 20 mm, while in contrast, the rear one has been reduced by 10 mm.
Technical Characteristics of the New Car
The car can boast of its body – the torsional rigidity has been improved by 40% compared with the previous version, and the suspension has received a full reconfiguration.
The manufacturer claims that the drag coefficient decreased by 0.02 from 0.35 to 0.33, enabling to make this model a little more economical.
As for the engines, the new Sportage will be powered by a new 1.6 liter petrol naturally aspirated power unit, producing 132 horsepower. This version is also available with the turbocharged engine of 177 hp power. This model will also be mounted with the following engines:
- the 1.7 liter turbo diesel CRDI unit with a capacity of 115 hp;
- the turbocharged two-liter CRDI diesel with an output of 135 hp and 185 hp.
All of the engines are coupled with six-speed manual or automatic transmission, and only the maximum 177 hp version will be paired with a robotic seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The drive can be either full or front as in the previous model.
The Car Price and Equipment
The KIA Sportage of the fourth generation will go on sale across Europe next year, but the price is yet unknown. The car has been equipped with modern safety features such as the automatic braking function to prevent facial collision, the system tracking the side blind zone, the Lane Departure Warning system, the assistant in exiting the parking space in reverse.
In addition, the basic version of the crossover will be implemented by the multimedia system with a bright 7-inch touch screen display (the more expensive versions feature the display, that is increased to 8 inches), and the standard sound system with six speakers and the total capacity of 160 watts. For an additional fee, it will be possible to make an order for the 8-speaker audio system, delivering 320 watts.
