It should be recalled, that the Opel Meriva is a compact van of the L-class, equipped with the front-wheel drive. The debut of the updated model of the second generation was a part of the 2014 Brussels Motor Show. And now, get acquainted – the Internet network got the first shots of the next generation of the car, caught by photospies.
In addition, photos of the Opel Meriva were posted on the Web in just a couple of days after spy photos of the new 3008 Peugeot model had appeared – is it a coincidence? It is unlikely, since the two companies have decided to set the same pace in the automotive industry.
The New Features in the Exterior and the Interior of the 2017 Opel Meriva
If taking the shots into consideration, the doubts may appear as for the fact that the camouflage film really hides the car model, which comes to replace the Meriva compact van.
But it is really true; the pictures have once again confirmed the previous rumors on the network that the brand from Germany had decided to leave the unpopular for today car market MPV (minivan) segment and to begin the development of the SUV-class, which is increasingly gaining popularity. In fact, if the company did not take this step, the Meriva compact van release would have to be permanently stopped.
On the shots, it is clearly visible that the tested model is equipped with a standard layout of doors. Let’s remind that the predecessor was distinguished by the FlexDoors system, which swing open towards the back of the car. This solution by the Opel developers will reduce the costs while the mass production of the car, which, in its turn, will make it more affordable.
Although, as for the novelty interior, the engineers have still left the FlexSpace system, which makes it easy to transform the interior for adding more usable cargo space and greater comfort. It should also be noted that the FlexSpace System provides forward and backward tilting of the rear seats separately from each other, as well as folding flat into the floor.
In addition, the new generation of the Opel Meriva has got a slightly different appearance. Designers have prepared a few changes for the front of the crossover: the upgraded front bumper, modified head optics, fog lights and a grille.
As an option, the LED optics and stylish 18-inch set of wheel disks are provided. The exterior has become more modern and extraordinary. Due to the roof, sloping to the hood, the area of the windshield has been increased, so that the novelty interior has become more spacious, adding a feeling of airiness.
As for the interior, if you believe the rumors, the major changes have not been applied, except for the appearance of new decorative accents in the design. It can also be noted, that the revised IntelliLink multimedia system with a more powerful processor and an updated interface includes: the sound system, Bluetooth, the 7-inch Touch Screen as well as the USB-port.
The 2017 Opel Meriva Specifications
Why has the General Motors selected the French to be a partner for the development of the Meriva of a new generation? For the reason, that the Peugeot 3008 has received a huge demand since the start of sales, even without the all wheel drive mode.
In addition, the 3008 model of the second generation, receiving the new upgraded platform, certainly have to develop the resulting popularity. The new Meriva is just built on a platform borrowed from the next “three thousand and eight” model, which in its turn will provide the Opel engineers with an opportunity to equip the novelty with all the urban SUV technical features.
Though having the same base (model EMP2), it does not mean that the cars will be powered by common engines. It should be recalled, that the predecessor has received a new CDTI diesel unit with a volume of 1598 cc, meeting the EURO-6 ecological standards.
This engine replaces the 1.7 liter powertrain, producing 136 hp (320Nm). With the new engine, combined cycle fuel consumption is no more than 4.5 liters per a hundred kilometers, and the harmful CO2 emission into the atmosphere doesn’t exceed 115g / km. The engine is coupled with a six-speed mechanics, allowing reaching the speedometer mark of 100 km per hour in 9.0 seconds.
Regarding to the other versions of power units of the restyled 2014 Opel Meriva we can say that they are also mounted in the model. They are: the 1300 cc liter diesel engine with an output of 95 hp and a 1400 cc petrol engine forcing 100-, 120- and 140 horsepower. The five- as well as six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions are offered for the customers to choose from.
In conclusion, we can add that shifting to the SUV-class the Meriva will be assembled at GM plant in Zaragoza (Spain), in parallel with the production of the Peugeot 3008. In addition, the novelty will receive an access to a range of 2015 Opel Astra powertrains, but it is yet not clear which of the engines the GM would exactly prefer.
Apparently, the automotive company from Rüsselsheim has manufactured the new 2017 Opel Meriva to compete the Nissan Qashqai, the Japanese best-seller. This is confirmed by the overall dimensions as well as by the initial cost of the minivan crossover from Germany, which are practically similar to those of the Japanese SUV.
Currently, the new edition of the compact minivan is available on the domestic market, as is the basic version, the Meriva JOY costing 15 thousand USD. The top Cosmo modification is estimated at the price of more than 15 thousand USD.
