The paparazzi are curious not only about famous people’s lives, but keep an eye on various technical innovations, too. This especially refers to the automotive industry, where many people pay attention to exterior, rather than to the technical characteristics.
One of the main intrigues of the next year is the new Swedish Volvo S90 2017. The exterior of the car has been successfully kept as a secret by Swedish companies until some photos of this model appeared on the Internet.
It is expected that the sales of the S90 will start in spring 2016. What are the expectations from the new item?
Continuity and foundation for future generations
Until the publication of the images, the designers have arranged sort of a private competition as for the S90 exterior. Some “missed”, and some were far from the truth.
One of the Chinese companies has produced models in 1:43 scale by the order of the Volvo Company. If in August the lenses got the prototype, now a sufficient number of thumbnails of photos are there in the Network. Of course, their quality is not perfect; however, it is possible to get some idea out of it.
The Volvo S90 is intended to replace the previous S80 model, produced since 2006. In the basis of the S90 design is the platform Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), developed jointly by the Swedish and Chinese engineers. It is also used in the production of the Volvo XC 90 of the second generation. It is planned that in the future the new generation wagon V90 will be released on its basis.
Externally, the S90 is more reminiscent of a popular four-door coupe. Thanks to the changed lines of the vehicle body, the novelty will have sportier look than its predecessor. A distinctive feature of the new generation becomes “Thor’s hammer” – a LED insert shaped as a letter T, laid on its side. It is already known due to the XC90, the company plans to use this design solution in the future.
Earlier photos of the prototype also provided us with food for thought. The car is carefully camouflaged, but this did not prevent experts from observing of a massive radiator grille and distinctive optics of taillights. All of this can be seen even through the dense layer of camouflage.
The interior of the car is no less important than its look.
During the internal design, lots of funds were spared on costly materials, so the S90 will be a more premium model than the S80. The new model interior will be maintained in the “Swedish” style and will be as good as the XC90 in quality and in style. In interior decorations, Orrefors crystal was used, seats are upholstered with high quality leather, and the wooden elements are made using elite varieties of wood. The touch screen on the center console is similar to that which was used in the SUV.
Volvo’s designers hope that through high quality workmanship and attention to detail the model will be able to compete with the leading sedans from Audi, BMW and Mercedes.
The heart of the car
The creators were not only very attentive to the exterior and interior design, but also did not forget about “stuffing”.
As mentioned above, the S90 will have a modular chassis SPA. Most likely, the majority of power units will be the same as in the XC90 SUV. A Four-cylinder engine with a 2 liters capacity will be equipped with turbo- and superchargers. This characteristic allows getting 5700 rpm with a power of 316 horsepower. 60-HP electric motor and automatic gearbox will transmit torque to the 4 wheels at the same time.
It should be recalled that all motors, installed in the S90, are included in the lineup of Drive-E and are more environmentally friendly. It is expected that the novelty will have such versions of engines as: D4 and D5 diesel, T6 petrol and T8 plug-in hybrid petrol.
Official presentation of the Volvo S90 should be held in 2016 at the Geneva motor show. However, the Swedish company is intended to move forward, and within a few years, it is going to completely update the lineup. The Swedes also plan starting production of compact cars based on the new CMA platform, the development of which is carried out jointly with Chinese Geely partners.
